The Tenth Family Report examines the living conditions of single and separated parents, with a focus on life course dynamics. One in five families in Germany consists of single or separated parents. This equates to approximately 1.7 million single parents with children under the age of 18. The vast majority of single parents are mothers, though the proportion of fathers has been rising and reached 18 percent in 2023. The report highlights that single mothers are particularly at risk of poverty. Although most are employed, many rely on supplementary social benefits. Many single or separated mothers focus on care work and leave the workforce or reduce their paid work, thereby taking significant financial risks. As a result, the poverty risk for single parents is about three times higher than for women living in couples.
